The new Horizon Europe Strategic Plan (2025-27) has recently been launched, setting out the policy priorities related to research funding in the European Union for the next three years. Included in the health cluster (Pillar II) are proposals concerning future pandemics and the emerging challenges in an ageing European population. In alignment with the main objectives of the European Health Union, preference will be given to research initiatives focused on the next health crises.

As a result, new submissions should approach the development of appropriate medical countermeasures and data-driven prevention procedures for serious, cross-border health threats. Those applications which stress such long-term challenges, linked to the ageing population, chronic conditions, and the increase of the burden of non-communicable diseases will be prioritised. Expected impacts are staying healthy in a rapidly changing society; living and working in a health-promoting environment; tackling diseases and reducing disease burden; ensuring equal access to innovative, sustainable and high-quality healthcare; and developing and using new tools, technologies and digital solutions for a healthy society.
Additionally, the strategic plan comprises nine new co-funded and co-programmed partnerships. Of relevance for neurologists and related medical sciences is the Brain Health initiative. With more than 20 international partners, this programme aims to develop a comprehensive approach to brain research by capitalising on current cutting-edge methods.
As we know how relevant Horizon Europe calls are to our members, the EAN will periodically provide relevant information on this topic to our community via the EU Research Funding page of our website. As a member of the biggest European community in neurology, the EAN can also support your consortium. Having gathered experience as a coordinating and dissemination partner, our team of experts can leverage your proposal to the next level. For inquiries or comments please contact scientific@ean.org
