The EAN Regional Teaching Day was a satellite pre-congress one-day event before the 39th congress of the Hungarian Neurological Society and was held on 19 June 2024, in Hunguest Hotel Szeged, Szeged, Hungary. We were happy to welcome 55 participants (neurology residents and young neurologists) from different cities of Hungary.
Our selected topics were: dementia, epilepsy and stroke. We invited lecturers from different countries i.e. Croatia, Italy, and Israel, and we are grateful for all invited speakers for accepting our invitations.
Prof. Laszlo Csiba (President of the Hungarian Neurological Society) and Prof. Peter Klivenyi (Head of the Department of Neurology, University of Szeged, Szeged, Hungary) were the main organisers and patrons of the event.
At the beginning of the morning session a welcome video from Prof. Paul Boon (who was at the time still EAN President) was shown to the audience focusing on the good colaboration between the Hungarian Neurolgocal Society and the EAN – especially with the past EAN congress that was held in Budapest in 2023.
Prof. Svetlana Tomic (Department of Neurology, Osijek University Hospital Centre, Osijek, Croatia) was the first speaker. She is a co-chair of the EAN Scientific Panel on Dementia and Cognitive Disorders and captured the audience with her presentation on: Disease modifying treatment in Alzheimer’s disease – current and future perspectives.
Prof. Stefano Meletti (Department of Biomedical, Metabolic and Neural Sciences University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena, Italy) was the next speaker. He is a member of the management group of the EAN Scientific Panel on Epilepsy, and had to give his lecture online. Although this was a last minute change, the audience was very intersted to learn more on: Diagnosis and therapeutic approach to acute seizures and status epilepticus.
Prof. Natan Bornstein (Brain Division at Shaare-Zedek Medical Center, Tel-Aviv, Israel) was the third speaker for the day, and was very enthusiastic about this field of expertise on stroke. The title of his lecture was: Management of cerebral venous thrombosis – current approach.
Pablo Antonio Fritz-Ruenes (Department of Neurology, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary) was the local EAN Resident and Research Fellow Section speaker. His talk was about grants and news for neurologists in training all over Europe and opportunities for residents within EAN.
The afternoon interactive workshops were held by the same speakers. Prof. Tomicpresented patient case reports and discussion about potential dementia diagnosis, followed by Prof. Bornstein who addressed the issue of internal carotid artery stenosis – to intervene or not intervene? in whom, how and when?
Participants evaluated all speakers and course facilities in order to give feedback to the organisers, and certificates of attendance were provided to all participants.
Finally we would like to express our grateful thanks to the EAN for this special opportunity.
adn special thanks to Julia Mayer, Head of the Education Department at the EAN Head Office for her special kindness and helpfulness during the organising process.
This was a very successful and interactive event, and we believe that this was the first – but not the last EAN Regional Teaching Day in Hungary.
