On 16–18 May 2025, the Cyprus Neurological Society (CNS) proudly hosted the 19th International Neurological Conference in Ayia Napa. A highlight of the event was the inclusion of a Regional Teaching Session (RTS) co-organised with the European Academy of Neurology (EAN). This was notably the first-ever RTS in Europe and the second EAN-related event in Cyprus, following the highly successful Regional Teaching Course (RTC) held in Nicosia in 2022, which was co-organised with the University of Cyprus .
The RTS focused on motor neuron diseases and featured three state-of-the-art presentations:
- Advances in ALS treatment by Prof. Albert C. Ludolph (Germany)
- Introduction to Neurogenetics – approach of patients with suspected MND by Assoc. Prof. Georgios Koutsis (Greece)
- EMG approach in motor neuronopathies by Prof. Mamede de Carvalho (Portugal)
The session received outstanding feedback from attendees, who praised its scientific quality, clear content, and practical relevance to clinical neurology. Participants particularly appreciated the opportunity to engage directly with internationally recognised experts.

Running alongside the RTS, the main congress offered a broad programme covering a wide range of neurological disorders, delivered by leading academics from across Europe.
Two additional EAN-endorsed sessions further enriched the conference:
- Dr Andreas Liampas, CNS member and National RRFS Representative for Cyprus, presented updates on RRFS initiatives and opportunities for young neurologists.
- Prof. Antonio Toscano, EAN Secretary General, discussed ongoing EAN programmes and the Brain Health Mission, encouraging greater participation from smaller member countries.
A well-attended poster session added further depth to the event, showcasing notable clinical cases and encouraging vibrant exchanges among delegates.
The CNS General Assembly was also held during the conference. Key outcomes included:
- A commitment to deepen strategic collaboration with the EAN
- A focus on securing grants and training pathways for early-career neurologists
- Plans to host more high-level scientific events in the future
Overall, the 19th CNS Conference was a major success, reinforcing Cyprus’s growing presence within the European neurological community and laying the groundwork for future academic collaboration.
As this was the first RTS to be integrated into a national neurological congress, we hope it will inspire other countries to host similar sessions within their own national meetings, further strengthening regional education and collaboration across Europe.
