Originally EAN planned to organize an Autumn School course for residents in neurology in October 2020 in Greece.

Combining an academic career with the clinical work is one of the many challenges faced nowadays by neurology resident and neurologist at the beginning of their career. As the number of clinician/scientists grows, the opportunities and potential paths one can choose is also growing exponentially.

Due to the health situation all over Europe, EAN had to cancel the in-person Spring School 2020, but thanks to a very enthusiastic faculty, we were able to hold this course almost with the entire programme as a virtual school.

As a Christmas Special to EAN’s Resident and Research Fellow Section (RRFS) members, we are hosting our first series of Virtual Master Classes in the course of December 2020 for free.

On 25th May 2020, the first virtual general assembly of the Resident and Research Fellow Section (RRFS) of the EAN took place. The assembly received broad participation from RRFS members who were interested in gaining insight into the annual report as well as the new Treasurer elections.

The title of the RRFS Special Session of this year is “Unleash your potential with EAN”. The session was chaired by Dr. Giovanni Di Liberto, neuroimmunologist and Chair of the Resident and Research Fellow Section of the EAN. The idea behind this session is to provide some example of successful careers boosted by EAN fellowships and encourage RRFS members to take advantage of this great opportunity. In this session, we hosted colleagues awarded with an EAN clinical or research grants in the past years and a successful story.

I believe that the covid-19 pandemic showed us that we, as neurologists, are physicians first, and neurologists second. In other words, as neurology has increasingly developed into an acute care field, it is important that we are not only specialists in neurology, but also strive to build and keep expertise in fields adjacent to our core competences.

I am Nina Khizanishvili, a young neurologist from Tbilisi, Georgia. I currently work in Germany but I still get a lot of information about the situation in the First University Clinic of Tbilisi State Medical University in my home country.
