Prof Gunhild Waldemar (GW): Prof. Winblad, from EADC’s point of view, how is the research into dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease in particular, highlighted or addressed in the Swedish national dementia strategy launched so recently? Will it positively influence the ongoing research? Prof. Bengt Winblad (BW): Sweden launched a ”National Dementia Strategy” May 24, 2018. A general disappointment was that one of the countries leading much of research in care, epidemiology, clinical and basic research did not even produce a Dementia Plan like the other Scandinavian countries and most other EU countries.

In 2 weeks, my sabbatical period in the United States, which started in April 2018, will come to an end. The word sabbatical comes from “Sabbath,” which in the biblical Old Testament was described as, “In the seventh year the land shall have a Sabbath of complete rest …” Today in Academics, it is obviously not simply rest. For me it was a break after 23 years of an uninterrupted hospital and university activity, 17 of which as chair or vice-chair of large neurological departments.

Apomorphine subcutaneous infusion in patients with Parkinson’s disease with persisten motor fluctuations (TOLEDO): a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Lancet Neurol July 25, 2018. doi:10.1016/S1474-4422(18)30284-4. Subcutaneous infusion of apomorphine, a potent dopamine receptor agonist, is widely used in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) with motor fluctuations not optimally controlled with oral medication, but the previous evidence base to support this approach was weak, derived from open label studies.

he Congress will begin each morning and afternoon with Plenary Sessions providing overviews of the phenomenology, pathophysiology, and current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies of various movement disorders. These sessions will be followed by Parallel Tracks, permitting participants to select specific diagnostic or therapeutic areas for more concentrated study.

This year, the hospital visit of the Resident and Research Fellow Section (RRFS) of the European Academy of Neurology during the EAN congress was on Monday 18th June 2018. Sixty-seven residents and research fellows from 16 different countries mainly around Europe but also including countries from Africa went to the Hospital de Santa Maria which is one of the university hospitals of Lisbon.

The 2018 recipients, Prof. Amadou Gallo Diop (Senegal) and Prof. Riadh Gouider (Tunisia) have contributed exceptionally to develop neurology in Africa and to strengthen the relations between African neurology and EAN. The EAN Service Award comes with an official document and a personalized golden hammer.
