January 1, 2019The European Parliament Interest Group on Mental health, Well-being and Brain Disorders (with co-hosting MEPs Tomas Zdechovsky and Nessa Childers), EBC, GAMIAN-Europe, the European Psychiatric Association (EPA), EUFAMI, the Expert Platform on Depression, Eurocarers, the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP), the UEMS – Sector of Psychiatry and the International Federation for Psychotherapy have launched a joint policy paper on major depression, entitled ‘A sustainable approach to depression: moving from words to actions’, at the European Parliament in Brussels. -

As 2018 draws to a close, the Social Impact of Pain (SIP) initiative can be proud of its achievements in the past 12 months.

The African Academy of Neurology (AFAN) was created in August 2015 under the aegis of the WFN to be the African regional representative body for all that relates to neurology and allied fields. AFAN collaborates actively with other international organisations; the WFN, EAN, AAN, and MDS amongst others, to achieve the goals of AFAN and its member states. These international-organisations have been invaluable in their support; financially, logistically and by sharing expertise. AFAN is still in its fledgling state and relies greatly on its international partners. With passing years, as we gain experience and become stronger, we hope to reach our place on the international neurological stage as equal partners in the theatre of neurological disease.

4 December 2018: Alzheimer Europe’s European Parliament lunch debate focuses on Dementia as a priority of the EU health programme Alzheimer Europe held its final lunch debate of 2018 in the European parliament on 4 December 2018. The debate focused on the topic of “Dementia as a priority of the EU health programme”.

In November 2018, the first EAN Autumn School took place in Loutraki, Greece. A remote destination not too far from Athens airport was chosen to gather 60 Neurologists in Training and 9 faculty members.

Dear colleagues and friends, the weeks before the change of the year usually serve not only to accomplish the last pending tasks but also to reflect on the past 12 months and to think about what lies ahead. I probably have this in common with many of you who profit from some slowing down of work during the holiday season as everyone is busy preparing for Christmas and the turn of the year invites to look back and to make new plans.
