This year has so far been a busy one for everyone involved in education at EAN, with plenty of exciting new projects joining the traditional fixtures in our education calendar. As Chair of the EAN Education Committee, it is my pleasure to give you a brief update on some of our recent activities and to remind you about our brand new programmes with deadlines still open.

“Challenges for Women in Neurology” has been an amazing session centred on the challenges that women have to face in their careers as neurologists and researchers. The session was covered with three excellent and touching talks by Professors of Neurology and was moderated by Prof. Elena Moro and Dr. Antonella Macerollo.

Israel is located on the southeastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea and the northern shore of the Red Sea. With a population of 8.7 million inhabitants, it is a liberal democracy with a parliamentary system, proportional representation, and universal suffrage. The population is highly diverse including Israeli Jews (75% of population) of varied ethnicity, Israeli Arabs (~21% of population), and a spectrum of religiosity (secular, orthodox, and Haredi- ultra-orthodox).

The newly elected delegates representing the full members and delegates appointed newly by their national societies met for the first time in Lisbon during the annual meeting of the EAN. This assembly has been elected (or appointed) for the next 4 years, and will meet again in Oslo (2019), Paris (2010) and Vienna (2021).

Education is one of the key elements of the activities of the European Academy of Neurology. While the congress is well known to most of our members and European Neurologists the activities outside the congress are much less known. EAN has a special committee working on education[1] with Prof. Hannah Cock as the chair and the teaching course subcommittee under the leadership of Prof. Claudia Sommer. They are charged to develop an educational program including education for neurologists in training and advanced courses with the emphasis on training for the general neurologist. While the field of Neurology is getting increasingly broader it is of paramount importance to set a common ground for all neurologists which our education committee has carefully developed. For the congress educational programme, a five-year curriculum of the educational content covering all relevant topics has been developed over the past 3 years and parts of this plan are also applied to the educational activities outside the congress.

Elena Moro: Dear Prof. Vincent, you have recently been awarded with the WFN Medal for Scientific Achievement in Neurology. We congratulate with you for this well-deserved outstanding recognition! In light of your longstanding experience in the world of neuro-immunology in particular, what do you think is it the most recent important discovery in your field? Angela Vincent (AV): Well first of all thank you for the congratulations.  I am thrilled to receive the WFN Medal and it is much appreciated. Neuroimmunology is a relatively recent discipline – probably only first defined in the 1980s.
