The European Academy of Neurology was founded just 18 months ago and is becoming increasingly accepted as a hub for scientific knowledge and premier education (please see the EAN movie). This is reflected in the number of neurologists and trainees who join the EAN as members. To remind you: EAN has close to 25 000 associated members from 47 national European Member Societies, but accepts neurologists wanting to upgrade their membership as individual members.

David Vodušek (DV): The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) declared at the last World Congress on Pain in Buenos Aires that the period, October 2014 to December 2015, would be the Global Year Against Neuropathic Pain. What do you consider the most important achievement of this action? Chris Wells (CW): The Global Year Against Pain evolved from an idea of David Niv’s, former European Pain Federation (EFIC) President and IASP Council member. He conceived the idea of a Day Against Pain in 2001 and this developed into first a Week and then a Year Against Pain, which IASP and EFIC now jointly sponsor and promote.

Elena Moro (EM): As Programme Committee Chair, can you share you vision about the role of the EAN within the community of European Neurologists? Paul Boon (PB): I believe EAN has a unique mission to provide a platform for neurology in Europe, at a large scale and high level of professionality. Europe has a strong tradition of clinical discoveries, scientific breakthroughs and academic teaching in the field of neurology.

Prof. G. Deuschl, President of the EAN and Prof. K. Lees President of ESO are pleased to announce that EAN has joined with ESO to promote optimal management of stroke in Europe. EAN and ESO are the leading societies for neurologists and stroke specialists, respectively, in Europe.

Electromyography (EMG) is the use of electrical signals from voluntary muscle to diagnose weakness as being due to nerve or muscle disease or disorders of the central nervous system. At EMG the potentials are recorded from muscle at rest, during weak effort and during maximal voluntary effort.

For December 2015 we have selected: Ramanujam R, Hedstrom A-K, Manouchehrinia A, et al. Effect of smoking cessation on multiple sclerosis prognosis. JAMA Neurol 2015; 72(10):1117-1123. The usual course of multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by the conversion to secondary progressive disease within about 20 years from the first attack. Great efforts are currently made to modify the disease progression with the use of aggressive and expensive medical treatments.
