Following the positive results of the first edition, we are delighted to announce the second edition of the EAN Junior Reviewer Programme for 2027/2028. The call has just been opened, and we warmly invite eligible RRFS and Full members to apply and take this exciting opportunity to develop their peer-review skills.
The new Junior Reviewer Training Programme was created in collaboration with the European Journal of Neurology (EJoN) to empower early-career neurologists and trainees by equipping them with essential skills in scientific peer review – an area often overlooked in traditional academic training.
The 12-month programme follows a focused mentorship model, with five early-career neurologists each being matched with an experienced senior reviewer in a shared area of interest, allowing them to develop their peer-review skills through expert guidance and practical experience.
Why peer-review training matters
Peer review is the cornerstone of scientific integrity, yet training opportunities remain scarce. Junior researchers frequently face challenges in learning how to critically evaluate manuscripts, provide constructive feedback, and navigate editorial processes. At the same time, journals worldwide struggle with a shortage of qualified reviewers, leading to delays and inconsistencies in publication quality.
Learning through guidance and practice
By combining guidance with practical experience, the programme helps junior participants develop both competence and confidence. In addition, junior participants embark on a structured learning journey that strengthens their critical appraisal, academic writing and constructive feedback skills.
More than a reviewing exercise
For early-career neurologists, becoming involved in peer review is also a step towards broader participation in the scientific community. The experience can support future roles as authors, researchers, reviewers and editors, while encouraging careful engagement with new developments across neurology. The programme therefore contributes not only to individual professional development, but also to a strong and diverse future reviewer community. The senior reviewers’ expertise, dedicated guidance and commitment are essential to the success of this learning experience.
