This symposium was chaired by Prof. Reetta K. Kälviäinen, Kuopio, Finland, and Prof. Hannah Cock, London, United Kingdom. Overall, the symposium updated us about the link between genetic and epilepsy, and outlined the benefits and controversies regarding the use of genetical test in epilepsy.

Prof. T. Fleming Outeiro, from Goettingen, Germany, gave a very interesting lecture about “Tau protein in normal and pathological brain”.  He lectured on the misfolding of tau protein and its effects.  Protein folding and homeostasis remain a constant challenge for the normal cell. Tau is a complex microtubule binding protein.

Prof. Günther Deuschl, President of the EAN, also welcomed everybody. He highlighted some recent important studies published by European researchers, the celebration of the Brain Prize in Europe, and some EAN achievements such as the guidelines project. The EAN is also particularly interested in assessing the burden of neurological diseases in Europe.

The year of 1949 was a celebrating year for Neurosciences in Portugal, since our professor of Neurology Egas Moniz was awarded the Nobel Prize of Medicine and Physiology, an important recognition of his neuroscience research. This was a mark that very much inspired the interest of our medical school on neurosciences.

Scientific plagiarism is defined as using or closely imitating scientific content from an original author without clear reference and/or authorization. Plagiarism can be complete or partial, in the original or translated version or limited to paraphrases of the original text. Prof. Manuel Correia (MC): The first neuroscientific society in Portugal was founded in 1948, and it was named the “Sociedade Portuguesa de Oto-Neuro-Oftalmologia. The first century of Ophtalmoscopy was celebrated in Lisbon on the 26th of April 1952.
