For May 2016 we have selected: Meinzer M, Darkow R, Lindenberg R, Flöel A. Electrical stimulation of the motor cortex enhances treatment outcome in post-stroke aphasia. Brain 2016:139;1152-1163. Language deficits after a stroke can be devastating and have a remarkable impact on the quality of life. Rehabilitation strategies can improve aphasia also in the chronic phases, but there is the overall need of more efficacious and focused treatment strategies. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to change cortical excitability and induce synaptic plasticity without side effects.

On March 18th, 2016 the ‘Consensus statement on European Brain Research’ (Morris et al., 2016) has been launched in Brussels at the Brussel office of the European Brain Council. Several organisations related to brain science, including the European Academy of Neurology, participated. The European Brain Council is uniting the European organisations of physicians for Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery, the scientists for both molecular and systemic Neurosciences and the European patient organisations for neurological and psychiatric diseases (see below 1).

David B. Vodušek (DBV): The EFNR is a multidisciplinary organisation open to any professional with an interest in neurological rehabilitation. Its structure is quite similar to that of the EAN. Can you briefly illustrate how the EFNR operates and works? Leopold Saltuari (LS): The European Federation of NeuroRehabilitation Societies (EFNR) is open to all colleagues interested in the field of neuro-rehabilitation. It was founded in order to create a common platform for the national European societies of neuro-rehabilitation as well as other organizations with similar interests.

Elena Moro (EM): As incoming co-chair of the Scientific Panel “Child Neurology” can you briefly introduce yourself and your main areas of interest to the Neuropenews readers. Lieven Lagae (LL): Currently, I am the president of the European Pediatric Neurology Society (EPNS) which is representing the large majority of pediatric neurologists in Europe. I am a full Professor at the University of Leuven Belgium and Director of the Pediatric Neurology program at the University Hospitals of the University of Leuven Belgium. We offer a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic program for all major neurological problems in children.

Elena Moro (EM): As incoming co-chair of the Scientific Panel “Neuro-traumatology” can you briefly introduce yourself and your specific field of expertise to the Neuropenews readers. Oliver Kastrup (OK): I received my training in neurology and psychiatry at the University of Essen-Duisburg including a stint in neuroradiology. I have been holding the post of assistant professor in neurology and senior consultant for twelve years here in Essen. My special interest is rare and inflammatory diseases as well as neuro-traumatology.

Elena Moro (EM): As incoming co-chair of the Scientific Panel “Neuro-oncology” can you briefly introduce yourself and your specific field of expertise to the Neuropenews readers. Stefan Oberndorfer (SO): As a Neurologist, my special field of interest is clinical Neuro-oncology. Presently, I am working as a head of Department for Neurology at the Karl Landsteiner University Clinic of St Pölten in Austria. My main areas of clinical research are brain tumors, tumor associated epilepsy, palliative care in brain tumor patients, spinal metastases, neurotoxicity of anticancer treatment, paraneoplastic neurological syndromes and symptomatic treatment in neuro-oncology.
