The University of Cyprus in Nicosia was thrilled to host the highly anticipated 9th European Sleep Foundation (ESF) Sleep Medicine School from 31 March to 3 April 2025, endorsed by the EAN. The event was a resounding success, offering a comprehensive and enriching experience for both newcomers and experienced professionals in the field of sleep medicine. The theme for this year was Sleep & Health, promising fascinating insights into the intricate relationship between sleep, health and technology.
The programme, opened by former EAN President, Prof. Claudio Bassetti and Assistant Prof. Panagiotis Bargiotas, featured a wide variety of lectures from renowned experts, beginning with the fundamentals of neurobiology and physiology and progressing to more specialised sessions on various sleep disorders, based on real-world case reports. The daily Sleep & Health sessions were especially inspiring, delving into how lifestyle factors like nutrition, exercise, and other interventions can enhance sleep; exploring the fascinating connection between sleep and brain health; and showcasing the latest technological advancements and emerging innovations that are shaping the future of sleep medicine.

The event featured a series of thrilling interactive workshops where participants had the opportunity to actively engage in practicing diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Participants had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with practical skills in areas such as sleep EEG/EMG/respiration scoring, sleep apnoea management, behavioural therapies, and the application of circadian rhythm assessment tools.
The Art and Sleep Exhibition was a real highlight, offering visitors a creative and educational perspective on sleep science. Attendees had the opportunity to explore an exhibition of posters of known paintings based on sleep disorders. I mostly enjoyed the “Creative Table”, as I named it, where attendees had the opportunity to create paintings, based on sleep.
The event was incredibly well organised, thanks to the amazing efforts and excellent facilities provided by the Medical School of the University of Cyprus. Their meticulous planning ensured everything ran like clockwork, from the educational sessions to the social activities, offering the perfect balance of learning and cultural experiences. Finally, we had a fantastic time on the walking tour of Nicosia, visiting the Cyprus Museum, and enjoying the social gatherings, where we had the opportunity to enhance our network and discuss our personal views on sleep and brain health.
