During the 24th National Congress of the Romanian Neurological Society, held on 3-5 June 2026, the Young Neurologists’ Working Group organised a joint session together with the Resident & Research Fellow Section (RRFS) of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN).
This session was chaired by Mihai Radu Ionescu, the Romanian national RRFS representative and Secretary of the Romanian Young Neurologists’ Working Group alongside Vlad Tiu, General Secretary of the Romanian Neurological Society.
A special guest, Prof. Matilde Leonardi, Chair of the EAN Communication Committee and Director of the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute in Milan, Italy, delivered a warm opening address encouraging collaboration among young neurologists and encouraging them to become certified Brain Health Ambassadors through the EAN Advocacy Training programme.
The session continued with presentations from Alexandre Balcerac, RRFS representative for France and David Schreier, former RRFS representative for Switzerland, currently affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School. Alexandre Balcerac explained why he chose to pursue neurotoxicology and gave a deep reflection on how neurologists can choose their own subspecialty of interest, while David Schreier presented his current research on sleep disorders and disorders of consciousness.
Young neurologists representing centres from across Romania then presented their ongoing research, discussed complex clinical cases and shared perspectives on career development and personal growth within the field of neurology.
The session concluded with closing remarks from Vlad Tiu and Mihai Radu Ionescu who also announced the theme for next year’s Young Neurologists’ session: clinical cases or research projects that required interdisciplinary collaboration, either across neurological subspecialties or with other medical specialties.
