Brain health is increasingly recognised as a global health priority. The Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Brain Health at the University of Bern, developed in collaboration with the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), provides an interdisciplinary and evidence-based perspective on how brain health can be understood, protected and promoted across the lifespan.
The one-year postgraduate programme is delivered fully online, complemented by an optional two-day on-site event in Bern, and brings together leading international experts and participants from diverse professional and geographical backgrounds. Its curriculum is structured into four modules:
- Introduction to Brain Health – key concepts and determinants of brain health, brain function, brain–body interactions, neuroplasticity, ageing, genetics and environmental influences.
- Brain Disorders – major neurological, mental and behavioural disorders, their mechanisms, and associated risk and protective factors.
- Risk and Protective Factors & Interventions – evidence-based approaches to promoting brain health on an individual level, including physical activity, nutrition, sleep, social connection, stress management, mental activity and environmental factors.
- Brain Health Implementation – translating knowledge into practice through assessment, public health, prevention, policy and the development of brain health strategies.
Following two successful cohorts with participants from around the world, the CAS in Brain Health will enter its next cycle in January 2027.
