Richard Frackowiak is head of the department of clinical neurosciences at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and co-director of the Human Brain Project. He is also chairman of the Medical Science Committee of Science Europe.

Neurology is an important discipline and is rapidly developing. Recent economic studies have identified that one third of the European population is affected by a brain disease and they need treatment by neurologists, neurosurgeons and psychiatrists. The costs for these diseases are getting astronomic.

First of all I would like to thank the EAN Head Office, Julia Mayer, the EAN Education committee, especially Professor Detlef Kömpf, and all our invited speakers for their support in organising the Regional Teaching Course in Baku.
