It is such a pleasure for me to see how EAN has been continuously growing in terms of members, activities, engagements, promotion, and impact on several important activities inside the European Community.

For February 2020, we have selected: Kleine-Borgmann J, Schmidt K, Hellmann A, Bingel U. Effects of open-label placebo on pain, functional disability, and spine mobility in patients with chronic back pain: a randomized controlled trial.

Iceland is a country of 360,000 inhabitants, who are mostly of Icelandic ethnic origin together with 11% of people, who are of eastern European ancestry. There are seven universities in Iceland. The University of Iceland has a faculty of medicine, from which around 48 physicians graduate each year. Medical education consists of seven years: three preclinical years, three clinical years and an internship year. Training mostly takes place in the University Hospital in Reykjavik but also in several local hospitals and primary care clinics outside the main hospital. For specialty training in neurology, physicians have to move abroad, and most go to Scandinavia, or to the United States.

The two European Reference Networks (ERNs) for Rare Neurological Diseases and Rare Neuromuscular Diseases (ERN-RND and ERN-EuroNMD) are launching a new joint educational program in collaboration with the European Academy of Neurology.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the European Academy of Neurology for having granted my research training Fellowship at the Neurodegeneration Imaging Group (NIG; www.nig-politis.com), based at the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London, UK. The NIG is headed by Professor Marios Politis, who is leading expert in the field of neuroimaging in neurodegenerative diseases.

I would like to convey my sincere gratitude to the European Academy of Neurology for having granted me a research experience fellowship at the Epilepsy Unit in Timone Hospital, Marseille supervised by Professor Fabrice Bartolomei.

ERN-RND provides educational webinars on rare neurological and neuromuscular diseases – in collaboration with the European Reference Network for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases (EURO-NMD) and the European Academy of Neurology.

It is our pleasure to introduce the new EAN Scientific Panels’ Management groups for 2020-2022 period! The Scientific Committee received altogether 173 applications from 36 different countries.
