The fourth EAN Science School took place in Salzburg, Austria on 21-25 March, bringing together 65 participants from 23 countries.
The event started on Friday evening with a welcome dinner and warm opening remarks by Thomas Berger, Chair of the Science School Taskforce.
This year’s overarching theme was Fundaments and Emerging Fields in Translational Neurosciences, which was tackled in nine topics across three days through daily morning lectures and afternoon group workshops.
Saturday featured European Journal of Neurology Editor-in-Chief Didier Leys, who discussed the art of publication in a changing environment, followed by a timely lecture by Gennarina Arabia on the consideration of sex and gender in neurosciences, and a stimulating presentation by Erich Kvas on statistics.
To wrap up the first day, we explored downtown Salzburg through a guided walking tour and ended the evening with a delightful traditional Austrian dinner.
The second day was equally enriching, starting with a very informative presentation on activities of the EAN Residents and Research Fellows Section (RRFS) by RRFS Treasurer Katarzyna Krzywicka. This was followed by incoming European Journal of Neurology Editor-in-Chief Claudia Sommer’s lecture on the neurobiology behind pain, after which Ralf Linker provided insights on the emerging role of the brain-gut axis in autoimmune CNS disorders, followed by Gargi Banerjee, who gave an engaging talk on transmissible proteinopathies, from models towards human scenario.
Stephanie Forkel opened the last day of the Science School with a discussion on disconnectomics in stroke. Friedhelm Hummel discussed the models to predict the effects of non-invasive neuromodulation. And, last but not least, Marta Scarioni delved into the prediction of cognitive decline to prevent dementia.
After three days of lectures and workshops, the participants received their certificates of attendance and enjoyed a last evening together at a goodbye party. It was truly a worthwhile experience, providing participants with the opportunity to listen to high quality and inspiring speakers, meet outstanding colleagues, exchanging knowledge and ideas, and establish long-lasting connections.
