The European Academy of Neurology (EAN) is now a member of the European Health Alliance on Alcohol (EHAA), a coalition of European health organisations representing over 1.2 million medical and healthcare professionals. The EHAA provides clinical leadership and works to reduce alcohol-related harm across Europe through evidence-based policy advocacy, professional education and engagement with policy makers. The EAN’s representatives on the EHAA are EAN Fellow and Honorary Member, Prof. Gunhild Waldemar, and EAN Executive Director, Anja Sander.
The EHAA was officially established in May 2025 with funding support from the World Health Organization & European Union joint project Evidence into Action Alcohol (EVID-ACTION) and in collaboration with the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). This followed the European Alcohol Health Alliance Symposium held in December 2024, which gave rise to the Copenhagen Declaration (PDF), setting out the details of the formation of the ‘European Alcohol Health Alliance of Medical Organisations to Address Alcohol-Related Harm’.
As a leading risk factor for disability, a major cause of more than 200 chronic diseases, and a factor in many injuries and mental health disorders, excessive alcohol consumption can have major implications for brain health. Avoiding it has been identified as a determinant of good brain health within both the EAN’s 2022 paper Brain Health Strategy: One brain, one life, one approach and the 2025 paper A roadmap toward promoting and improving brain health in Europe and closing the awareness and funding gap. As such, the EAN is keen to contribute to furthering the aims of the alliance to strengthen the influence of health-care professionals on alcohol policy at local, national and European levels.
