The European Journal of Neurology continues to attract a considerable number of original submissions, and can only publish approximately 15% of those received. Articles cover a broad range of clinical and scientific topics within neurology, but the proportion of articles on a disease area generally corresponds to its prevalence.

It is unknown which of his many books James Parkinson (1755-1825) has considered the most important one. His 500 pages ‘Medical Admonitions’ for lay people, his ‘Chemical Pocket Book’ covering interesting facts on modern chemistry of the late 18th century, the ‘Hospital Pupil’ on the educational standards of physician education, his collection of minerals and fossils  ‘Organic Remains of a Former World’ or any other of his many contributions. History has clearly shown that his most important contribution was his 1817 ‘Essay on the Shaking Palsy’ which celebrates its 200th birthday this year.

For February 2017, we have selected: Grool AM, Aglipay M., Momoli F., et al., for the Pediatric Emergency Research Canada Concussion Team.  Association between early participation in physical activity following acute concussion and persistent postconcussive symptoms in children and adolescents. JAMA 2017:316;2504-2514. Practical recommendations in the management of concussion in pediatric patients have stressed the need of physical and cognitive rest starting immediately after the injury.

It is a pleasure to write this report for the EAN and to share my personal experience with my European Colleagues.

Thanks to the EAN research fellowship, I have worked for one year in the lab of Prof. Edgar Meinl in Ludwig-Maximillian University Institute of Clinical Neuroimmunology in Munich. It was an invaluable experience for me both academically and socially.

Ann Little: Prof Giunti, congratulations for winning the 2016 EFNA Neurology Advocacy Award for Health Professional. Your work in advocating for ataxia patients is highly commended. Could you briefly explain to us the main concept behind your Ataxia Centre in London, which has been put forward as an example of best clinical practice? Paola Giunti: I established the Specialist Ataxia Centre in London over 10 years ago to address my patients’ needs. The ataxias are rare complex disorders, the majority of which are truly multi-systemic with a number of extra-cerebellar symptoms requiring multi-specialist care.
