As part of the EAN Academic Path, the Clinical Fellowship offers an opportunity for neurologists in training and early-career specialists to broaden their clinical expertise through hands-on observation and learning at leading neurological centres across Europe. Designed to support professional development and international exchange, the programme enables participants to gain insights into different clinical practices, healthcare systems, and specialised techniques while building valuable professional networks.
Learning from Centres of Excellence
The EAN Clinical Fellowship provides a structured observational experience in departments with recognised expertise in a specific neurological field. It is aimed at neurologists who are still in training as well as those who have recently qualified and are establishing new services or developing specialised clinical interests. Through the fellowship, participants can gain first-hand insight into clinical practice, service organisation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and specialised procedures used by their host department.
The programme supports visits of six to twelve weeks to approved EAN host departments outside the applicant’s country of residence, with fellows participating on a full-time basis. This immersive experience allows participants to observe established approaches, exchange knowledge with colleagues, and bring new perspectives and expertise back to their home institutions.
As daily clinical activities may not always be conducted in English, applicants are encouraged to consider the language requirements of their chosen host department when planning their fellowship.
Continued Support for Neurologists in Training from Ukraine
In recognition of the ongoing challenges faced by colleagues in Ukraine, the EAN will once again offer five additional Clinical Fellowships for RRFS members from Ukraine. These fellowships provide an opportunity to spend six to twelve weeks in a European neurological department, helping participants continue their professional development and strengthen international connections.
The Buddy Programme
A distinctive feature of the Clinical Fellowship is the Buddy Programme. Each host department nominates a resident or trainee neurologist to support the fellow before and during their stay. Buddies can assist with practical questions about the department, hospital, and everyday life in the host city, helping fellows settle in quickly and make the most of their experience.
The programme also benefits the buddies themselves, providing a valuable opportunity to build international connections and exchange experiences with colleagues from across Europe. As a token of appreciation, buddies receive complimentary EAN RRFS membership for the following year.
