The EBC releases its 2019 Annual Report

The European Brain Research Area project – EBRA – was created as a catalyzing platform for brain research stakeholders (researchers, clinicians, patients, governments, funders and public institutions) to streamline and better coordinate brain research across Europe.

The European Brain Council (EBC) recently provided feedback to the European Commission on the Horizon Europe proposals that were published in June 2018.

David B. Vodušek (DBV): When looking back at your long and varied career, can you tell us what was crucial for you to choose neurology as your specialty, and headache as your primary research field of interest?  Jes Olesen (JO): Already as a medical student, I was interested in neurology. I thought at that time – and I still think so today – that the brain is by far the most interesting organ in a human being.

Under the leadership of Jes Olesen, Denmark, the European Brain Council (EBC) has developed a ‘cost of brain disease’ project in the last decade, which essentially became one of the most important databases for the development of European Research policy. In 2012 the costs for neurological disease alone were estimated to be 303 billion €/year and the costs for all brain diseases added up to 798 billion €/year, which is about 6 times the budget of the European Union.

The Value of Treatment Report was presented in Brussels on June 22nd 2017 at a medical conference organised by the European Brain Council (EBC). The European Union spends just over three euro a year per patient on research into brain disorders – while levels of access to treatment in many Member States are becoming worse, not better.

We welcome Prof. Vodušek in his new role as chairman of the European Affairs sub-Committee (EAsC). He is already the extremely successful chair of EAN’s Liaison Committee and will in future also take care of the EAN-projects in Brussels. We are more than happy to have him also in this new position and thank him for his engagement.

Ann Little (AL): Alistair, congratulations on winning an EFNA Neurology Advocacy Award in the Patient Advocate category. Can you tell us when, how and why you became involved in patient advocacy?  Alistair Newton (AN): Thank you.  It is an honour to have been chosen for this award, especially as I was part of the 'core' team of the EFNA Board during its formation and through its first decade.  In turn, I congratulate the current EFNA leadership on its successes and excellent development since then.
