Gian Luigi Lenzi (GLL): The EAN – European Academy of Neurology is the platform by excellence for all European neurologists. Can you briefly outline the mission of The Michael J. Fox Foundation to the neurologists and Neuropenews readers?

Belief in progress is dauntless. Media keeps informing about inventions which, very soon for certain, will lead to victory over cancer or Alzheimer's disease. The literary set, some conservative politicians or church officials sometimes doubt the progress, their scepticism is often motivated ideologically and hardly resonates among doctors or scientists.

Gian Luigi Lenzi (GLL): As Chair of the MDS-European Section, can you illustrate the role you would like the EAN to cover within the world of European Neurology? Olivier Rascol (OR): In my view, the EAN has crucial strategic and practical roles to cover in order to reinforce the knowledge of neurological disorders and improve the care of neurological patients in Europe and worldwide.

The Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award is one of the most important medical awards and goes this year to Mahlong R. Delong, Atlanta, USA and Alim Benabid, Grenoble, France for the ‘development of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS), a surgical technique that reduces tremors and restores motor function in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease’.
