The session was chaired by Dr. Giovanni Di Liberto, neuroimmunologist and Chair of the Resident and Research Fellow Section of the EAN. The idea behind this session is to provide some example of successful careers boosted by EAN fellowships and encourage RRFS members to take advantage of this great opportunity. In this session, we hosted colleagues awarded with an EAN clinical or research grants in the past years and a successful story.

I believe that the covid-19 pandemic showed us that we, as neurologists, are physicians first, and neurologists second. In other words, as neurology has increasingly developed into an acute care field, it is important that we are not only specialists in neurology, but also strive to build and keep expertise in fields adjacent to our core competences.

I am Nina Khizanishvili, a young neurologist from Tbilisi, Georgia. I currently work in Germany but I still get a lot of information about the situation in the First University Clinic of Tbilisi State Medical University in my home country.

I would like to express my immense gratitude to the European Academy of Neurology for granting me a 12-month research training fellowship. This gave me the opportunity to join the Clinical Neuroimmunology Lab at the University of Basel, under the supervision of Prof. Derfuss. It has been a great honour for me to work in one of the leading multiple sclerosis research groups.

Being an EAN Research Fellow gave me the privilege to work in Prof. Tara Spires-Jones’ Lab in The University of Edinburgh, who is a pioneer in the field of synaptic degeneration in neurodegenerative conditions and healthy aging. I worked in the lab for more than a year, carrying out the research project entitled ‘Investigating degeneration of inhibitory circuits in Alzheimer’s disease brain’. It has been an exceptional scientific and personal experience that will have a profound influence on my future career.

Our new ebrain session on “Identifying epilepsy through patient videos” looks at the role of video recordings made by patients and their families/friends.

This year the eight edition of the conference entitled "Recent Advances in Clinical and Experimental Research on Dementia and Neurodegenerative Disorders" was held as usually in Bressanone, Italy. The event, which took place from 22 to 24 January, represents an interesting unique in the Italian panorama, starting from the choice to use English as the official language up to the calibre of the speakers.

The two European Reference Networks (ERNs) for Rare Neurological Diseases and Rare Neuromuscular Diseases (ERN-RND and ERN-EuroNMD) are launching a new joint educational program in collaboration with the European Academy of Neurology.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the European Academy of Neurology for having granted my research training Fellowship at the Neurodegeneration Imaging Group (NIG; www.nig-politis.com), based at the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London, UK. The NIG is headed by Professor Marios Politis, who is leading expert in the field of neuroimaging in neurodegenerative diseases.
