For May 2015 we have selected: The CADISS trial investigators. Antiplatelet treatment compared with anticoagulation treatment for cervical artery dissection (CADISS): a randomized trial. Lancet Neurology 2015;14:361-367. The treatment of extracranial carotid and vertebral artery dissection is still empirical. There is not enough data currently supporting the efficacy of antiplatelet or anticoagulant treatment to prevent a secondary cerebral ischemic event, estimated around 15-20% in some observational studies.

As outlined in previous chapter VI of this series, the last three decades have seen a steadily growing number of neurologists (not only) in Germany. This continuing rise is certainly supported by the expanding diagnostic and therapeutic options for neurological diseases, but this alone wouldn’t suffice as an explanation.

eatment of stroke has made tremendous progress during the past 3 decades. This is an excellent example how the introduction of new concepts and translational research has contributed to our field. The introduction of stroke units and thrombolysis with rtPa have been the main drivers of this outstanding development. But one patient group has always been left out of this huge progress. These were patients with large vessel occlusion, preferentially internal carotid, proximal media and combined media and anterior occlusions.

The first paper that I would like to point out to Neuropenews readers concerns a neurological syndrome that often I have personally disregarded, or linked to similar “foggy” presentations such as the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Serra J, Collado A, Solà R et al, have published in ANNALS OF NEUROLOGY, 12 february 2014, Vol 75, Issue 2, pages 196-208, a paper “Hyperexcitable C nociceptors in fibromyalgia” that initially escaped my attention (it was published one year ago) and that indicates how in fibromyalgia there is more than many neurologists (at least myself) previously thought.

Gian Luigi Lenzi (GLL): As President of the European Stroke Organisation, can you illustrate the role you would like EAN to cover within the world of European Neurology? Kennedy Lees (KL): EAN should represent specialists in neurology to ensure that their contribution to stroke care is recognised, and in countries where this is under-represented should work to promote their involvement. It should offer an educational function, teaching general neurologists about the latest and most important aspects of stroke that they may encounter in their practice.

Franz Gerstenbrand is 90 years!

The first paper that I would like to point out to Neuropenews readers was published as a “Perspective” in the September issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) by Michael S. Okun, with the title “Deep-brain stimulation – Entering the era of human network modulation”, on the occasion of the Lasker-Debakey Clinical Medical Research Award that in 2014 was given to “…two pioneers in deep-brain stimulation (DBS): Alim-Louis Benabid, a neurosurgeon, and Mahlon DeLong, a neurologist”.
