The European Academy of Neurology has introduced a new feature for our congresses and I would like to explain the ideas behind. Congress participants expect to be exposed to many features during the congress of the EAN. This includes cutting edge science, exiting news about the causes of neurological diseases and related translational research, new talents in the field reporting their latest research and modern teaching covering the many aspects of the neurologists practice. One other item was lacking so far: They also want to see the giants of our field who have done and are still doing innovative research and are known to be the best teachers.

Denmark has a 100-year history of research in multiple sclerosis (MS), but as everywhere, the number of published studies has grown almost exponentially during the last two decades.

Nearly a century ago – in 1920 – the renowned Danish physiologist August Krogh (1874-1949) received the Nobel prize in physiology and medicine for his work on the anatomy and physiology of the capillaries (1).

Electromyography (EMG) is the use of electrical signals from voluntary muscle to diagnose weakness as being due to nerve or muscle disease or disorders of the central nervous system. At EMG the potentials are recorded from muscle at rest, during weak effort and during maximal voluntary effort.

For almost 100 years there have been Danish neurologists with a dedicated interest in migraine and other headache disorders. 50 years ago the champion was Dr. Dalsgaard-Nielsen and my mentor Erik Skinhøj got his interest in migraine during his clinical training with Dalsgaard-Nielsen.

The EAN booth at the 1st Congress of the EAN was located in the Exhibition Hall and provided information about the EAN, its membership categories & educational grants, as well as the upcoming EAN congress in Copenhagen 2016.
