EAN Congress news

The year of 1949 was a celebrating year for Neurosciences in Portugal, since our professor of Neurology Egas Moniz was awarded the Nobel Prize of Medicine and Physiology, an important recognition of his neuroscience research. This was a mark that very much inspired the interest of our medical school on neurosciences.

Starting at the EAN congress 2018 in Lisbon, the EAN Teaching Course sub-Committee has proposed to have an educating AND entertaining quiz-show. A dedicated taskforce together with the support of the EAN Scientific Panels worked on the set-up of this educational session – the EAN BrainChallenge.

History Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is an autosomal dominant (AD) spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) initially described in descendants of immigrants from the Portuguese islands of the Azores. It was in 1972 that Kenneth K. Nakano and colleagues described the Machado family, with an AD, late onset, cerebellar ataxia with peripheral neuropathy. All family members were descendants from Guilherme Machado, who had migrated from São Miguel (Azores) to Massachusetts in the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.

Prof. Corino de Andrade graduated at Lisbon Medical School, Hospital of St Martha, in 1929. He began his practice at the main hospital in Lisbon (Hospital S. José) and kept visiting his Alma Mater with a serious commitment to practice neurology at the department of Egas Moniz, the only one in Portugal. This passion was soon rewarded with the residency in neurology.

João Cid dos Santos was a Portuguese surgeon (Lisbon 1907-1975) devoted to Vascular Surgery. After graduated at University of Lisbon - Faculty of Medicine in 1933 he moved to Strasbourg to practice vascular surgery with René Lerich.
